Introduction
Storz couplings are the industry standard for connecting discharge hoses on silo trailers. On Feldbinder trailers — both the fixed-tank EUT and the tipping-silo KIP — Storz connections operate under pressure and in the vibration environment of road haulage. The Storz design, based on rotation and lug engagement, is quick to connect, but that same ease of release can become a liability: under working conditions, a coupling can spontaneously disconnect.
That is where safety clamps come in. They are a simple but critical safety component: a band fitted over the connected Storz coupling that locks rotation and prevents release until the clamp is deliberately removed. On a Feldbinder silo trailer — where EUT discharge is entirely pneumatic and KIP discharge operates under pressure with the silo tilted — an accidental coupling release would mean product spillage and an aborted discharge cycle. For that reason, safety clamps are treated as mandatory operational equipment, not an optional accessory.

The galvanised steel band provides mechanical strength and corrosion resistance in road conditions. The rubber lining protects the Storz coupling spigot from abrasion and improves grip on the connection.

Compatibility with Feldbinder silo trailers (EUT/KIP)
- EUT — clamps secure discharge hose connections during pneumatic emptying of the horizontal tank. Size selection is based on the Storz coupling diameter on the specific trailer.
- KIP — the same Storz coupling is used during tipping-assisted discharge under working pressure; the safety clamp prevents release under that pressure.
The clamp fits the Storz coupling itself, so selection depends on coupling size rather than on Feldbinder trailer type.
Role in discharge safety
A safety clamp is easiest to appreciate in terms of what happens without one. A Storz coupling connects via rotation and lug engagement — the very mechanism that makes it fast to operate also makes it susceptible to working loose under vibration and pressure pulsations. The clamp physically prevents rotation, so the coupling cannot release accidentally.
On a Feldbinder silo trailer, this matters in two respects:
- Continuity of discharge — on the EUT, the entire discharge is pneumatic; a coupling release mid-operation interrupts the cycle and causes product dusting.
- Safety and cleanliness — an uncontrolled release under pressure is a risk to the operator and, on food-grade trailers, compromises the cleanliness of the discharge area.

Common failure modes
From service and operational experience:
- No clamp fitted — the most common cause of spontaneous Storz coupling release during discharge.
- Band corrosion — where the galvanised coating is damaged by road salt; the band loses strength and should be replaced.
- Worn rubber lining — when the rubber deteriorates, the clamp no longer grips the spigot securely; replace the complete clamp.
- Wrong size — a clamp that is too large will not prevent rotation; one that is too small cannot be fitted. Match to the Storz coupling size (C/B/A/90/100).
